“Here But I’m Gone: A 70th Birthday Tribute to Curtis Mayfield” will take place this Friday at New York City’s Lincoln Center. Rolling Stone reported that the show will include performances from the Roots, Sinead O’Connor, Mavis Staples and TV on the Radio members Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone. Mayfield suffered from a freak accident in 1990 that left him paralyzed and he died in 1999. This Friday would have been his 70th birthday.
The tribute will cover the legendary singer’s catalog, and all of the proceeds will go to the Curtis Mayfield Foundation. The foundation is set up to fund scholarships in Mayfield’s name for students out of Tri-Cities High School, a school for the arts in Atlanta, Ga.
Mayfield’s widow, Altheida, told Rolling Stone: “Curtis never really had that opportunity. He was literally on his own, kicked out of school in seventh grade and on the road about 11. He always tried to reach back into the inner cities. He went way out of his way to help.”
