The Mountain Goats have released the lead single from their 14th album, an uncharacteristically bouncy tune titled “Cry For Judas.”
Although the band has been performing songs from the forthcoming Transcendental Youth live recently, “Cry For Judas” is the first studio track that’s surfaced.
Bandleader John Darnielle said of the song, “Like a lot of the new album, this song is about saddling up your demons and learning to ride them like devil horses with big leathery wings. To the best of my knowledge, it’s also the first song ever to feature both a swinging horn section and a line about a baphomet drawn in chalk on an altar cloth, so everybody else who was trying to square that circle can take a breather now.”
Transcendental Youth is set for release Oct. 2 through Merge Records, but you can stream “Cry For Judas” below.
