For Thurston Moore, life after Sonic Youth apparently goes on. Making a plunge into darker musical territory, the guitarist has joined a black metal supergroup called Twilight.
Twilight was formed back in 2005 and has released two albums, but has never performed live. As of now, the band consists of Moore, Nachtmystium’s vocalist Judd, producer Sanford Parker, Stavros Giannopoulos from the Atlas Moth, Wrest of Leviathan and N. Imperial from Krieg.
Of Moore’s involvement in the group, Nachtmystium vocalist Blake Judd told The First Five:
Yeah. I’m really excited about that. I was a Nirvana fan when I was a kid, you know. I’m twenty-eight or twenty-nine years old now, so I grew up during that, and that’s what I listened to when I was a kid. I had Sonic Youth records when I was twelve. And to now know that, not only am I having a dialogue with this person about anything, but dude’s gonna join a band I started, and it’s like
whoah. Fucking amazing, amazing feeling.
Twilight’s certainly not the first musical project Moore has taken on since putting a hold on Sonic Youth. He released a single with his new band Chelsea Light Moving in June and has prepped a collaborative album with Yoko Ono and Kim Gordon for September.
