According to Deadline, 32-year-old director Jon Chu is in talks to direct the upcoming Sony Pictures film, Masters of the Universe. The live-action film would be based around the popular Mattel toy and television character, He-Man. This project isn’t Chu’s first experience with directing Mattel-centric films. Chu recently finished G.I. Joe: Retaliation, a follow-up to Stephen Sommers’ G.I. Joe. Retaliation has recently been pushed back to March 29, 2013 for some 3D conversion and shooting additional scenes.
The property has seen a film adaptation before in the form of Cannon Films 1987 flop, which featured Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella. The He-Man franchise has found more success as an animated venture. Premiering in 1983, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe ran for two seasons, but like many contemporary cartoon shows, found new life through syndication. The show still remains a cult classic.
It’s unclear exactly what Chu’s take might be on the franchise. The director is also known for the hip-hop dance film Step Up 2: The Streets.
