Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3 to Receive 3D Re-Releases

LucasFilm has confirmed its intentions to re-release the final two Star Wars prequel films, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, on Sept. 20, 2013 and Oct. 11, 2013 respectively.

The announcement came at Star Wars Celebration VI in Orlando, Fla. this past weekend. LucasFilm had initially stated the likelihood of releasing the second two prequels in 3D depended upon the success of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in its theatrical 3D re-release. Hitting theaters earlier this year, Episode I made approximately $44 million, which apparently fit the desired outcome the film executives had in mind.

What has fans reeling most is the possibility of the original trilogy receiving the theatrical 3D re-release treatment as well. Though no official statement has been made by LucasFilm, one would think that given the fiscal opportunity behind such a franchise as Star Wars that this possibility seems close to inevitable.
