‘Free Pussy Riot Fest’ Goes on Despite Pressure from Russian Government

On Sunday, ‘Free Pussy Riot Fest’ was held in St. Petersburg, Russia in support of feminist punk band Pussy Riot, even after the Russian government made attempts to shut it down. The government threatened to close the venue, Glavklub hall, by citing safety violations. The show went on, but the hall was encircled by dozens of riot policemen who arrested four people for jaywalking after the show.

The music fest was attended by 1,000 people and was headlined by some of Russia’s biggest rock protest bands, including DDT and Televizor. Members of the audience showed their support by wearing Pussy Riot’s signature headgear known as a balaclava. Show organizers say that proceeds from the show will be given to Pussy Riot members and other jailed activists.
