The end seems to be drawing near for the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. According to Hollywood Reporter, Josh Radnor hinted that the possible ninth season would be the show’s last.
The upcoming eighth season will mark the end of a two-season-renewal of the show and while the season has yet to air, discussions for a ninth season have already begun.
During the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, CBS Entertainment president, Nina Tassler, said that they were very optimistic for a ninth season.
“They know we want the show to come back next year, we’re having conversations right now,” Tassler said. “We’re not there yet in terms of resolving the season, we’re in early conversations and we’re pretty optimistic.”
Even with the excitement of the very possible ninth season, the news is still very bittersweet. While promoting his recent film, Liberal Arts, Radnor said that the decision needs to be made soon so writers can prepare for the end.
“So many things have to drop into place for that to happen. They really need to figure it out because the writers need to know. They’re the pressing issue right now because they have to figure out if they’re wrapping up the show at the end of season eight or season nine. (We’ve) just very recently been approached about that and we really can’t say either way right now,” Radnor said.
While the decision for a ninth season is still unclear one thing is and that is fans can’t wait to finally meet the mother. Be sure to tune in Sept. 24 when the eighth season of HIMYM premieres on CBS.
