Saturday Night Live creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels announced in an interview with The New York Times that the role of Barack Obama has been handed to cast member Jay Pharoah. Veteran cast member Fred Armisen has been portraying the commander-in-chief since 2008. But Michaels stated it was time to “shake it up.”
Pharoah joined the SNL cast in 2010 and has since become known for his impressions of Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.
Additionally, Michaels also confirmed that returning cast member Jason Sudeikis will remain with the show at least through January, and will continue to portray Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
The 38th season of SNL is set to premiere this Saturday with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane hosting and musical guest Frank Ocean.
