25,000 Participate in Jimmy Kimmel's Emmy Prank on Twitter
Jimmy Kimmel made a big promise before he hosted the 64th Primetime Emmy’s. He promised audiences “the biggest prank ever” at the Emmys. True to his word, Kimmel pranked TV audiences with the help of Tracy Morgan.
Kimmel recruited Morgan to act as if he had passed out on stage. Kimmel then proceeded to ask the audience (both in attendance and watching at home) to tweet and post on Facebook, “OMG Tracy Morgan just passed out onstage at the #Emmys. Turn on ABC now.”
According to TV Guide, audiences listened to Kimmel and posted to their Twitter accounts. @TwitterTV is a feed that tracks any tweets about television. The feed counted nearly 25,000 tweets regarding the prank.
Showing true commitment to the prank, Morgan laid on staged for about ten minutes. While “passed out” the award ceremony went on as if nothing was happening, even presenting the award for “Best Writing For a Drama Series.”
Morgan finally left the stage by being carried off by John Galecki, Ty Burrell, Max Greenfield and Eric Stonestreet.
While the prank got some shock, the more shocking news from the awards ceremony had to be the giant snub towards the series Mad Men. After being nominated for 17 awards, the AMC drama series walked away with no awards. Also walking away with no awards, was the breakout HBO series Girls, which was nominated for four awards.
Unlike Mad Men and Girls, there were some big winners at the Emmy’s. Most notably had to be Louis C.K., Modern Family and Homeland.
