Today in 1896, F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minn. With works like The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night and This Side of Paradise, Fitzgerald captured the spirit of the Jazz Age that defined 1920s America, and to this day he remains one of the country’s most celebrated fiction writers.

Though he wrote widely on the Jazz Age, The Great Gatsby was Fitzgerald’s magnum opus, and it’s hard to argue that there has been a greater American novel. In honor of what would have been his 116th birthday, we’ve compiled a gallery of 16 different Gatsby covers from over the years.
