CNN announced today the creation of CNN Films, a branch of the world-renowned news organization devoted to securing feature-length documentaries to air on CNN and CNN International, in addition to theatrical distribution.
According to CNN Worldwide Managing Editor Mark Whitaker, the move is part of a “wider strategy to acquire original non-fiction content to complement CNN’s award-winning news programs.”
The first documentary secured by the network is Girl Rising, directed by Academy Award Nominee Richard E. Robbins. The film tells the stories of several girls around the world fighting diverse odds in order to achieve their dreams. The film will air in spring 2013.
In addition, CNN Films has secured development deals with Academy Award Winning Director and Producer Alex Gibney and Director Andrew Rossi, both of who will develop original documentaries to air on the network.
It is the intention of CNN Films to air original documentaries examining various political, social and economic subject matters. Films will premiere in primetime and re-air to increase exposure.
