CR Smith Wins HGTV and <i>Paste</i>'s "Be the New Sound of HGTV" Contest

Over the summer, Paste joined forces with the producers of HGTV’s House Hunters International to discover a great new songwriter. After sifting through hundreds of submissions, CR Smith was named the winner of the “Be the New Sound of HGTV” contest. His song, “This Way Home,” will be featured in the marketing and promotional campaign for the new season of House Hunters International, which launches today.

Smith—the music director at Faith Chapel in Billings, Mont.—wrote the song with his friend Edward Keels. Smith hasn’t pursued his own music since independently releasing his album, Life In Between, in 2005.

“I still can’t believe that I won this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Smith said. “It’s surreal, but so exciting to think that my song will be played all over America as [part of] the House Hunters International [promotional campaign].”

Jennifer Leitman, HGTV’s vice president of marketing and creative services, said Smith’s song was chosen because it has the right attitude, heart and lyrics.

“At HGTV, we’re excited to give an artist this opportunity to make it big and reach new fans,” Leitman said. “He’s helping redefine our sound and providing a fresh, emotional and memorial hook for one of our most popular shows.”

Check out the song’s lyrics below and listen to it starting tonight during House Hunters International on HGTV at 10:30 p.m. EST. Smith’s song and nine more will also be available to download here as a free sampler on Oct. 15. You can also watch a preview for the show below, which features Smith’s winning song.

Another day, another town
Another road to wander down
Trying to just find paradise
You went in search of something more
What it was you weren’t quite sure
But it’d be worth any price

You thought you’d find blue skies and the grass a deeper shade of green
But now you’re not sure what is real and what’s illusion…

Oh, all signs are pointing this way home

You’ve seen the best of what’s around
The finest and the most renowned
Works of art each every one
You always eye the other side
It’s hard to keep from going blind
When you’re staring at the sun

You thought you’d find blue skies and the grass a deeper shade of green
But now you’re not sure what is real and what’s illusion…

Oh, all signs are pointing this way home

You thought you’d find blue skies and the grass a deeper shade of green
And now you’re quite sure that it’s real and not illusion…

Oh, all signs are pointing this way home
