Silver Linings Playbook Switches Distribution Strategy
David O. Russell’s upcoming Silver Linings Playbook has been receiving a considerable amount of Oscar buzz in the buildup to its initially planned release of Thanksgiving weekend. However, Deadline reports that the Weinstein Company has decided to switch the film’s distribution strategy from a single weekend to a platform style release, beginning this weekend.
The film will now be released in approximately 16 theaters in 10 different cities a week before the initially planned debut. The new plan also calls for the film to expand to 440 locations over Thanksgiving weekend, which is significantly lower than the originally planned estimate of 2,000 theaters.
Hoping to ride favorable early critical reviews all the way to the Academy Awards, it appears the Weinstein’s are hoping that making audiences wait even longer to see the film to boost ticket sales.
