Today Judd Apatow’s most recent work, This is 40, hits the big screen, but already the writer/director is working on something new, and it sounds like nothing we’ve ever heard from him—a play.
“I have a great idea. Maybe like the best idea I’ve ever had,” Apatow tells GQ. “It requires me to create characters and situations that have absolutely nothing to do with my experience…It’s about victims of the criminal-justice system and the challenges they face.”
He goes on to express his excitement about creating something that has a “social conscience,” rather than the comedies he’s so well-known for. That’s not to say it won’t be funny, or maybe it is. “I don’t know yet,” he says. “I think it will. But it might stop being funny.”
So why the switch to the stage? “I miss doing something where I’m interacting more with the audience. I like the idea of writing something and rewriting it every night based on how it’s playing.”
Apatow is currently writing the play, but it isn’t yet know when we can expect to see it. Until then, fans can catch This is 40 in theaters tomorrow.
