The Wrap reports that Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader will be stepping into the Baywatch role made famous by David Hasselhoff.
Hader has been cast as the head lifeguard in the Paramount reboot of the hit 1990s TV show, which starred Hasselhoff and helped launched Pamela Anderson’s career.
The film, directed by Reno 911 co-creator/star Robert Ben Garant will reportedly be a comedy that parodies the original show’s overly serious tone. Garant has also confirmed that Hader will play the Hasselhoff character but that a contract has yet to be signed. For his part, Hader’s spokesman has denied that the actor signed on for the part.
The new film, which has been constructed from drafts by Rescue Me writer Peter Tolan and Break Up writer Jeremy Garelick as well as contributions from Garant, centers on a group of lifeguards as they explore a oil rig off the coast of Malibu that is soon revealed to be a hidden meth lab.
Garant says the cast and crew are aiming to start production around April. Both Hasselhoff and Anderson are expected to have cameos.
