Paul Dano, the young character actor with memorable roles in Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood and, most recently, 2012’s Ruby Sparks, has been cast as Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson in a forthcoming biopic about the American pop legend.
The film, titled Love and Mercy, will be directed by Bill Pohlad, who worked as a producer on Tree of Life and Into the Wild. The film’s soundscape will be designed by Atticus Ross, the English composer known for his recent collaborations with Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor on the soundtracks of The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the former of which won the pair an Oscar for Best Original Score. Oren Moverman, who scripted 2007’s Bob Dylan biographical extravaganza I’m Not There, also wrote Love and Mercy.
Because the film will cover several decades of Wilson’s life, producers are looking to cast a second actor to play Wilson in his later years, but no casting for this role has been announced yet. Production on Love and Mercy is set to begin this summer.
