At a panel for the Television Critics Association press tour, The Office showrunner Greg Daniels revealed some crucial details regarding the final episodes of the NBC series.
According to a report by Deadline, original series lead Steve Carell will not return for any of the remaining episodes of the ninth season, including the series finale.
Daniels said Carrell believed that his goodbye episode, season seven’s “Goodbye Michael,” was a fitting end to his character arc. The rest of the show, Daniels continued, will act as the “goodbye that the rest of the show gets to have.”
Daniels did confirm, however, that past regualars such as Mindy Kaling’s Kelly, B.J. Novak’s Ryan and Zach Woods’ Gabe would return for future appearances.
The finale is apparently still in development and in the table-read stage. Once finished, the hour-long episode will be directed by Ken Kwapis, who directed the show’s pilot episode back in 2005.
Daniels also let it drop that a character will be fired in episode 15.
Throughout the panel, the show’s cast and crew fondly recalled their nine years together. Daniels referred to his connection with The Office as being “more emotional than any other show I’ve ever had.”
