American Express to Allow Twitter Users to Make Purchases Using Hashtags
According to a statement released Tuesday on BusinessWire.com, American Express will now allow Twitter users with Amex accounts to purchase eligible, discounted products by using hashtags in their tweets.
Cardmembers who have synced their credit card accounts to their Twitter accounts are able to tweet certain hashtags to purchase items Amex offers at discounted prices. Products that will be available starting Feb. 13 include Amex Gift Cards, Amazon Kindle Fire HDs and a bracelet designed by Donna Karan. These products and a few others will be available for purchase on Twitter until March 3 or until sold out.
Once customers tweet the hashtags using their synced account, they should check their “mentions” for a confirmation hashtag from @AmexSync. Once customers tweet the confirmation hashtag within 15 minutes of receiving it, their purchase is confirmed. The purchased product will be delivered to the cardmember to the billing address on record.
This isn’t the first time American Express has linked Twitter hashtags to credit card purchases. As The Verge points out, last year the credit card company allowed customers to receive discounts in return for tweeting hashtags for certain companies. Once a cardmember tweeted about a company and then purchased a product from that company using an Amex card, American Express would then partially credit the cardmember’s account.
