HGTV/Paste SXSW Preview - Thao & The Get Down Stay Down

HGTV has teamed up with Paste for our ninth annual party in Austin, Texas, at SXSW, March 13-16. With 11 bands per day, the lineup includes both some of the festival’s most exciting veteran performers including Billy Bragg, Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale, Josh Ritter and The Zombies, as well as newcomers like Foxygen, The Lone Bellow and GUARDS.

The official four-day party will be held at one of 6th Street’s biggest music venues, The Stage on Sixth (508 E. 6th Street), from noon to 6 p.m. In the days leading up to the event, we’ll post previews on the artists on the lineup.

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down

Hometown: San Francisco, Calif.
Members: Thao Nguyen, Frank Stewart, Adam Thompson, and Willis Thompson
Current Album: We The Common
For Fans of: Mirah, The Portland Cello Project, The Blow

There’s a soulfulness to lead singer Thao Nguyen’s voice that could potentially score the entire soundtrack to a blockbuster, romantic comedy or meaningfully express a richer range of complex emotions that often comes with personal experiences had away from the silver screen: her life.

In a description of We The Common on Ribbon Music’s website, Nguyen said the following about the album’s direction:

“We the Common is an album about wanting to be a human who tries and is grateful for the opportunity. It is about wanting to be better and closer to people. I have had over a year respite from touring and recording—in this year I started really trying to be a part of the community I live in and the family I was born into.”

We The Common is Thao & The Get Down Stay Down’s third full-length album. You can listen to the title track from the album below.
