Yesterday, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced in a press release that it will offer support for the integration of Apple’s Siri “Eyes Free” mode as a dealer-installed option for its 2013 Honda Accord and Acura RDX and ILX models later this year.
Honda asserts that the new Siri “Eyes Free” mode feature will allow drivers who own a compatible iOS mobile device to have Siri perform certain tasks on command and still be able to remain focused on driving, keeping their eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel.
The term “Eyes Free” refers to how Siri will still continue to function properly without having its mobile device’s screen lit up, thereby helping to eliminate another possible visual distraction for drivers.
Honda’s new Siri feature was made possible by changes made to the automaker’s software “to seamlessly integrate Siri Eyes Free mode into its Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® via the on board microphone and speakers.”
Compatible devices must run iOS 6.
