Jesse L. Martin to Replace Lenny Kravitz in Marvin Gaye Biopic
According to Deadline, Law and Order alum Jesse L. Martin will play the legendary Marvin Gaye in the upcoming biopic titled Sexual Healing.
Several competing Marvin Gaye projects have made headlines over the years. In 2008, Martin was attached to star in Sexual Healing co-starring James Gandolfini and directed by Lauren Goodman. F. Gary Gray and Cameron Crowe have also both attempted to make a film about the Motown singer’s life. In November 2012 after years of music licensing issues, Deadline confirmed that Lenny Kravitz would star in the the most recent Gaye project titled Midnight Love.
With Martin officially portraying Gaye, Sexual Healing will focus on the soul singer’s trip to England in the early 1980s where he attempted to control his addictions and relaunch his career.
Martin has many musical credits including the role of Tom Collins in Rent on Broadway.
Directed by Julien Temple, Sexual Healing is expected to begin filming by the end of this month in Europe. A release date has not yet been announced.
