Listen to a Rare, Early Smiths Rehearsal Tape

As NME points out, a rare demo from The Smiths, titled The Pablo Cuckoo Tape, was released on YouTube earlier this week.

The demo was made shortly before the iconic band’s 1984 self-titled debut. Drummer Mike Joyce tweeted the link and confirmed that it was “recorded on a cassette player lying on the floor in the rehearsal room.”

YouTube uploader hipsterdisco explained his ownership of this previously unreleased material: “I was lent the master cassette by a source close to the band who made the recording-let’s call him Pablo Cuckoo-in 1997, with a view to trying to put it out as a semi official release, as it was recorded before the band had signed to Rough Trade, so technically he had the rights to the recording.” Read his full story here.

Check out the tracklist and the 39-minute demo below:

The Pablo Cuckoo Tape:

3. What Difference Does It Make?
4. Reel Around The Fountain
5. These Things Take Time
