One of our favorite films of 2012 was How to Grow a Band, a documentary chronicling the formation of the Punch Brothers through footage shot by filmmaker Mark Meatto, who was embedded with Chris Thile and company for over a year. The film also includes interviews with the band members and musical icons such icons John Paul Jones.
On April 23, How to Grow a Band made its premiere digitally and is currently available to download via iTunes and Amazon. Now, Meatto and his production team have taken to Kickstarter in an effort to ensure that they will be able to also release the film in the physical form.
If their goal is reached by Friday, May 17, How to Grow a Band will eventually be available on DVD and Blu-ray as a two-disc set that will include loads of bonus footage. Punch Brothers fans: You want this.
The recent developments with How to Grow a Band coincide with a few recent developments from the Punch Brothers themselves. On Record Store Day they finally released their most recent EP, Ahoy, on vinyl. More significantly, though, they announced that this spring and summer the band’s members will tour with other musicians.
They will reunite to play a handful of festival dates as Punch Brothers, but for the most part they’ll be spending the majority of 2013 focusing on their respective side projects. This raises some interesting questions, especially in light of some of the themes touched on in How to Grow a Band, and next week’s issue of PASTE.com will include an in-depth interview with Mark Meatto that addresses these questions, as well as his experience with the band and the stunning documentary that resulted.
For now, though, visit the How to Grow a Band Kickstarter page to help make the two-disc DVD and Blu-rays happen, because not only is it better to own a hard copy instead of a digital file, but because there’s no telling what Meatto had to leave on the cutting room floor while putting the film together. This never-before-seen footage is what those second discs of DVDs and Blu-rays were made for.
