Lucasfilm Animation, the studio behind Star Wars, has us geeking out once again with the announcement of production on a new animated series called Star Wars Rebels, set to appear on the Disney Channel in fall 2014.
The comic series is the first “Star Wars”-related series since Lucasfilm was first bought by Disney last year and will air on television before J.J. Abrams’ film, Star Wars: Episode VII, hits theaters.
Rebels takes place between episodes III and IV of the Star Wars series, “where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a rebellion against the Empire is taking shape,” said the studio in a statement its website.
Created by many of the same hands that pieced together the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars—that made its premiere in 2008 on Cartoon Network— the first episode will appear on the Disney Channel and will then be followed by a series on international Disney XD channels.
Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class) will executive produce and write the first episode of Rebels, and will be joined by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: Clones) and Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spider-Man, Gargoyles).
Very little is known about the show at this time, but stay tuned for more details as the studio releases them. For now, here’s an interview with some of the creators of Star Wars Rebels:
