Pussy Riot Member Goes on Hunger Strike in Prison

Maria Alyokhina, a member of Moscow punk band Pussy Riot, has declared a hunger strike after a judge prohibited her attendance at a court hearing where she was seeking release on parole, the Associated Press reports. She is currently serving a two-year sentence for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” for a protest in Moscow’s main cathedral last year.

Watching the trial via video link, she told her defense not to partake in Wednesday’s hearing, saying the court was violating her rights. A judge in Perm, where Alekhina is being held, pushed back the hearing until Thursday.

Fellow Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova is also serving two years in prison. Her request for parole was denied last month. A third member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was paroled last year.
