Syfy’s Defiance Renewed

Syfy confirmed with Paste today that Defiance has been renewed for a second season. The series, which made its premiere in April, follows the aftermath of seven alien races arriving on Earth.

The announcement comes after airing only four episodes, with Syfy citing great ratings in its Monday night time slot. Production is slated to begin in August, and Season 2 is expected to make its premiere in 2014.

Part of the show’s popularity stems from a partnership with game company Trion Worlds, which gave the show’s audience a chance to participate in the show online. As of now, there are over 1 million registered accounts for Defiance across three gaming platforms.

“Bringing the rich world of Defiance to life has been in incredible team effort,” said Mark Stern, President of Original Content for Syfy, in a press release. “We couldn’t ask for better partners than Kevin Murphy, his amazing cast and crew, and Trion Worlds. We can’t wait to see where they take us in the second season.”
