YouTube is expected to launch a paid subscription service for some of its professional video channels, a plan that may be announced as early as this week, according to a Financial Times report.

The Google-owned site, which recently hit one billion monthly viewers, would employ an à la carte subscription service and use the finances to back the production of a broader range of content, such as TV shows and films.

The service would apply to up to 50 YouTube channels, which viewers could subscribe to for “as little as $1.99 a month,” according to FT.

“We have nothing to announce at this time, but we’re looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our partners with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer,” a YouTube spokesperson told Paste.
