Ben Gibbard Collaborates with Brett Nelson for Synth-Pop Death Cab Covers

In 2010, Built to Spill’s Doug Martsch and Brett Nelson released a slew of their classic, guitar-driven indie-rock songs with a new twist—as synth-pop throwbacks to the ‘80s new wave sounds under the moniker of The Electronic Anthology Project. The project then expanded in 2012 by adapting songs from Dinosaur Jr.’s catalog with J Mascis at the helm. Now, Nelson has teamed up with yet another beloved musician, as he and Ben Gibbard are to reimagine some of Death Cab for Cutie’s beloved tunes as synth-driven pop pieces.

This new collaboration will feature two older Death Cab songs re-envisioned with a synthetic soundscape. Gibbard’s croon will obviously feel right at home amidst warm electronic instrumentation, as evidenced by his timeless Jimmy Tamborello collaboration The Postal Service.

On July 2, The Electronic Anthology Project will release a digital single featuring “Soul Meets Body” (from 2005’s Plans) and “Champagne From A Paper Cup” (from 1998’s Something About Airplanes). A colored 7” release will follow sometime after the digital release.
