When most people picture the cruel, alcoholic orphanage keeper Miss Hannigan from the Broadway play Annie, we’re guessing Cameron Diaz isn’t the first face that comes to mind.
But Deadline reports that Diaz has signed on to play the negligent caretaker in the new film that’s being produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith. Diaz will star alongside Quvenzhané Wallis, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her terrific lead role in last year’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Jamie Foxx, who will play the parts of Annie and Daddy Warbucks, respectively.
Though Sandra Bullock had been tipped to play the part of Hannigan, Diaz stepped in for negotiations after The Blind Side actress backed out. Diaz’s 2011 film, Bad Teacher, saw her play a similar role as the profanity-using, marijuana-smoking teacher of a Chicago-area middle school.
Filming for Annie is expected to begin this fall, and it’s set for a release late next year.
