Cillian Murphy has joined the cast of In The Heart Of The Sea, Ron Howard’s upcoming adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick’s book, Deadline is reporting.
The film centers around the real-life 1819 disaster surrounding the whale ship Essex and also stars Chris Hemsworth and Benjamin Walker. Murphy will take on the role of second-mate Matthew Joy. After a sperm whale rams into the ship and sinks it, 21 crew members float adrift in small boats 3,000 miles from land. Joy and first mate Owen Chase (Hemsworth) then convince Captain Pollard (Benjamin Walker) to sail to South America. The remaining members battle disease, hunger and cannibalism as they drift in the sea.
Murphy is currently working on Transcendence with Johnny Depp and can be seen in the BBC miniseries Peaky Blinders this fall.
Brian Grazer, Joe Roth, Paula Weinstein and William Ward are producing the film, while Palak Patel is executive producing. Production is reported to begin in mid-September near London.
