With Matt Smith departing Doctor Who, Whovians are anxiously waiting for news of who will replace him. While fans previously speculated that there would be a new Doctor in July, BBC has now revealed that the Smith’s replacement will not be announced until August or September, according to RadioTimes.
Filming of Who’s Christmas special, which BBC had initially hoped to begin in July, now will not begin shooting until August or September. Since the actor playing the 12th Doctor will likely be announced right before filming begins, we can expect that a revelation of the new Time Lord won’t happen until late summer or early fall.
Handfuls of names have been thrown around amid speculation of who exactly will be Matt Smith’s successor, including Rory Kinnear (Skyfall, Black Mirror), Domhnall Gleeson (best known for playing Bill Weasley in Harry Potter), Daniel Kaluuya (The Fades) and Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia).
Matt Smith will return to Doctor Who for the 50th anniversary special on Nov. 23 along with Jenna Louise-Coleman, Billie Piper and 10th Doctor David Tennant.
