MGMT Finally Announces Self-Titled Third Album

Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden, the duo behind MGMT, have at long last officially unveiled their new album, MGMT, out Sept. 17 on Columbia Records.

According to Pitchfork, the album includes 10 tracks, including “Mystery Disease” and “Your Life Is a Lie”, both of which have been performed live, and the Record Store Day single, “Alien Days.” A music video for “Alien Days,” as well as two other tracks, are also in works.

In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, the duo revealed that they recorded their newest album as a two-piece as rather than the band they used on 2010’s Congratulations. Goldwasser said, “We’re not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it.”

MGMT will also be accompanied by “the Optimizer,” which will provide “unique visual elements to accompany and illustrate the new music” by delivering “listeners of the album with a simultaneous aural and optical listening experience featuring video and CGI work.”

The album was recorded in Buffalo, N.Y. with producer David Fridman (The Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse). Influences for MGMT included Aphex Twin and house music.

The band is currently touring and have dates planned until the end of the year. A U.S. tour will take place in November and December and will be announced soon. You can check out the dates and MGMT’s tracklist below.
