Sting is set to release a new studio album titled The Last Ship this fall, his publicist announced yesterday.
The album, his first full-length release of original material since 2003’s Sacred Love, is closely related with his original musical of the same name. The musical, which Sting has reportedly been working on for three years, is set in a shipyard near the 61-year-old musician’s hometown in Wallsend, England.
Though a tracklist is not yet available for the album, The New York Times reports that it will contain both songs from the upcoming musical and material that wasn’t included in the stage production.
The musical is set to be directed by Joe Mantello, who has previously worked on Wicked and Other Desert Cities, and it could arrive on Broadway sometime within the next year.
The Last Ship is set to be released on Sept. 24 by Cherrytree, Interscope and A & M Records.
