Both Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck are in the midst of arguably the biggest year of their illustrious careers. With an Oscar under Affleck’s belt and Timberlake’s largest debut week to date with The 20/20 Experience, the two team up for a high stakes thriller in Runner Runner, based on an internet poker game gone bad.
Runner Runner follows Timberlake as a Princeton student who loses all of his tuition money in an online poker game. Believing to have been cheated, Timberlake hunts down the man who screwed him over, Affleck’s character, and finds himself in the thick of an illegal off-shore gambling ring.
The promise of luxury lures the young student in as a protege, but attention from the feds makes him weary of continuing. Affleck’s character goes into full-on mob mode by the end of the trailer, feeding accomplices to crocs and promising for a difficult exit from the dangerous crew.
Runner Runner is directed by Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer) and also stars Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) and Ben Schwartz (Parks & Recreation). The film is set for a Sept. 27 release.
