20th Century Fox Deal to Bring at Least 9 Films to Stage
The film and theater have always been close cousins. It’s quite normal for Hollywood to look at Broadway for ideas of film adaptations (think Chicago, Rent and this year’s Between Us), but it happens much less often that a successful feature film finds its way onto the stage—Do we really need more Legally Blonde: The Musicals?
Deadline reports this might change now that 20th Century Fox has signed on to collaborate with top Broadway and film producers to develop theatrical productions from its immense catalog. Tony Award-winner Kevin McCollum (Rent, In the Heights), film producer John Davis and industry insider Tom McGrath are teaming up with the film corporation to produce at least nine theatrical adaptations over the next several years.
“For years we have been eager to expand our entertainment expertise to the world of live stage, but we wanted to do it right and most importantly, with the right people,” said Jim Gianopulos, 20th Century Fox Chairman and CEO. “We have been fortunate to have found great partners in Kevin, John and Tom to help to transform great Fox properties into exciting live stage entertainment for audiences everywhere.”
The projects will all be headed by McCollum, who said the joint venture would give a “much needed foundation to the creative process for myself, my partners, and the artists who will develop these shows.”
