Philip Seymour Hoffman Joins Showtime Comedy Trending Down

While Philip Seymour Hoffman hasn’t had much of a presence on the small screen, the Oscar-winning actor is finally making the leap for an upcoming Showtime series. Hoffman has made a few TV appearances, including a guest spot on Law and Order and voicing a character for Arthur, but he has yet to take on a recurring role until he just recently signed on for Trending Down, a comedy set to air on Showtime.

Vulture reports that Trending Down will star Hoffman as Thom Payne, “a man facing his own obsolescence after his advertising agency is taken over.” Pretty heavy stuff for a comedy, but Showtime has stated that the show takes a “blistering attack on our youth-obsessed culture, and a darkly comic examination of what it means to matter. Or matter not.”

Kathryn Hahn (Parks & Recreations, Anchorman) will star as Lee Payne, Hoffman’s wife. Hoffman will executive produce the series alongside its creator Shalom Auslander—acclaimed author and This American Life contributor—and Emily Ziff.

Philip Seymour Hoffman can be seen in the upcoming films The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and A Most Wanted Man, both set for release this fall.
