Sufjan Stevens Teases Savages Over Typography on Silence Yourself
Sufjan Stevens has a bone to pick with U.K. post-punk band Savages, and it’s not over their music. A notorious jokester and punctuation stickler on Tumblr, Stevens has taken time off from pointing out writing inconsistencies to focus his eagle eye on the design for Savages’ debut album Silence Yourself. Amid humorous posts on M. Night Shyamalan’s popularity and photos of twinkies, he teased the band on its typography. Read his text below:
“The very cool SAVAGES has allowed a very uncool typographical blunder on its LP cover: Helvetica Narrow (weight loss is the worst thing that can happen to an iconic font, aka iOS 6). Also can we talk about the weird italics (unnecessary affectation, and very un-British), cramped leading (totally unforgivable) and unnecessary line break? Who the Fraggle designed this?”
— Sufjan Stevens
However, Sufjan also wants you to know how much he cherishes Savages’ music. He added to his post recently:
“I will never forgive your awkward italics, but I will forever sing your anthems to my children’s children.”
