Matt Damon Takes on a Sarcasm-Detecting Robot in the First Elysium Clip

July 24, 2013  |  11:15am

With only few weeks left before Neill Blomkamp releases his sci-fi, political thriller Elysium, Sony’s TriStar Pictures is kicking their promotional effort into high gear. The first trailer for the upcoming film, which stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, was released back in April. Then earlier this month, we got a featurette with Blomkamp, Damon and Foster all explaining various aspects of the movie. Now, Yahoo! Movies has given us the first official clip from the film.

The minute-long video features Damon attempting to have a conversation with a very annoying and perceptive robot — it can detect sarcasm?! Though brief, the clip is able to pack in a great deal of the political forces at work in the film, showing a future world that is not only ravaged by poverty and pollution but that has also been abandoned by those who could help it.

Elysium hits theaters on Aug. 9. Watch the clip above.
