The first teaser for the upcoming adaptation of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, has been released.
The film centers around beloved South African leader Nelson Mandela, played by Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Prometheus), and his journey from a childhood spent in a rural village to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. The film also stars Naomie Harris as his wife, Winnie.
The brief clip offers a birds-eye view of an aged Mandela making his way up a hill. “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin,” Elba’s Mandela narrates. “People learn to hate. They can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart.”The real-life Mandela was recently hospitalized and reportedly remains in critical but stable condition.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom hits U.S. theaters in limited release on Nov. 29 and opens in the U.K. on Jan. 3. Check out the teaser above.
