Yasiin Bey is no stranger to politics. He’s one of the most highly acclaimed “conscious rappers” and although his output has slowed in recent years, he’s still an outspoken voice within our culture. Yasiin proved such recently by undergoing the same force feeding process as Guantánamo detainees in an effort to cease the force-feeding.
Earlier this year a group of Guantánamo detainees began a hunger strike to protest their continued detention, despite Obama’s promise to close the prison years ago. As a result of the detainee’s protest, officials at the prison have been force feeding prisoners.
Now Yasiin Bey is showing his support by taking part in these forced feedings himself. Human Rights organisation Reprieve and Bafta award-winning director Asif Kapadia have teamed up with Bey to shine light on the tactics.
In the disturbing video, Yasiin Bey is strapped into a chair and has a feeding tube forcefully shoved down his nose. Yasiin Bey breaks down in tears, explaining that he felt a burning sensation that felt like “something was going into [his] brain.”
You can watch the four-minute video over at The Guardian, but beware this video contains images that may be highly disturbing and are most definitely not safe for work.
