A few weeks ago SyFy announced their plan to develop a post-apocalyptic Wizard of Oz spin-off and now we’ve got yet another series in development that’s set to pay homage to L. Frank Baum’s iconic story. While CBS’ upcoming series won’t be as explicitly Oz-oriented as SyFy’s Warriors of Oz, the show is said to be inspired by characters and themes from Wizard of Oz.
As Deadline reports, Dorothy is a medical-based soap that takes place in New York and draws inspiration from Dorothy’s rag-tag crew of adventurers. While the idea sounds a bit extravagant on paper, it starts to make more sense when you dig deeper into the premise.
Spoiler alert, the Wizard doesn’t actually surgically give the Tinman a heart nor the Scarecrow a brain, but Dorothy aids her companions along the way and nurses them to full health at various times. The main characters all fit within the hospital schema, but let’s just hope they don’t leave out the flying monkeys.
Emily Fox (Ghost Whisperer) will write and executive produce alongside Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman (Elementary). The Wizard of Oz is set to return to theater’s in remastered 3D on Sept. 20 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the film.
