Comedians Support Dave Chappelle After Walking Off Stage in Connecticut
Currently on his first stand-up tour in years, comedian Dave Chappelle walked away from his set last night in Hartford, Conn., after completing his required 25 minutes of material.
Although he finished the set, he ditched his stand-up act when he was continuously heckled. The comedian instead opted to lecture the audience and literally burn time by smoking a cigarette.
The comedian talked about how he should have never abandoned his TV show. “I fucked up when I left my show. You want to know why? Because my show only has to be 22 minutes of television,” he said. “I could’ve gone on television, I could have read the phone book for 22 minutes, and I would have got $50 million. But tonight is different. Tonight my contract says 25 minutes and I only have three minutes left, and when that three minutes is up, my ass is gone.”
After his time was up, Chappelle’s ass was indeed gone—he asked the DJ to play Kanye West’s “New Slaves” and walked.
While some fans are criticizing Chappelle for abandoning his act, fellow comedians stood up for him, like Patton Oswalt who tweeted “It was SO RUDE how Dave Chaoppelle just walked offstage while I was screaming ‘RICK JAMES!!!’ & filming him with my camera.” And of course, more support from the community rolled in. The tour also backed Chappelle on Twitter, as well as tourmates Flight of the Conchords, who tweeted “Harshford!” after the show.
Hey Hartford! Pipe down and let Dave Chappelle do his thing!
