Although hip-hop group Death Grips were slated to perform at Chicago’s Bottom Lounge Friday night for a Lollapalooza aftershow, the duo never showed up. Pitchfork points out that the hundreds of fans who had squeezed into the venue to see Death Grips were beyond disappointed— and by disappointed, we mean royally pissed. Based on Twitter and Reddit buzz, angry concert-goers reportedly smashed Death Grips’ equipment—including Zach Hill’s drum kit— after they were informed that the group would not be performing.
Death Grips were also scheduled to perform at the festival on Saturday but were taken off Lollapalooza’s official schedule and replaced by Shaun White’s band, Bad Things. Before the cancellation was announced, the Bottom Lounge stage had been set up with a backdrop displaying a fan’s apparent suicide note.
Lollapalooza representatives posted on Facebook that the group “chose not to appear at Lollapalooza 2013.”
The Bottom Lounge also took to Facebook to address the debacle, writing: “We just wanted to let everyone know that tickets for last night’s Death Grips show are in the process of being refunded and everyone that bought tickets will have their money back shortly. We also would like to thank everyone at the show last night for being so incredibly cool about the situation. Despite being very disappointed, everyone at the show was respectful and we just wanted to let you know, that we appreciate your understanding as we were as surprised as you were.”
Death Grips have also canceled their scheduled appearances at the Osheaga festival in Montreal yesterday, as well as upcoming performances in Boston and New York.
