Details Emerge on Neill Blomkamp's Sci-Fi Comedy Chappie
Neill Blomkamp may have just released his big-budget sci-fi action flick Elysium last week, but the acclaimed director is already hard at work on his next project.
Unlike his first two feature films, which were message-heavy sci-fi dramas, Chappie will focus on laughs. The comedy follows life of an artificially intelligent robot who falls into the hands of some troublesome gangsters looking to use him for their own gain.
The film will once again team the director with actor Sharlto Copley, who played significant roles in both of Blomkamp’s earlier feature works. Copley will voice the robotic protagonist while Ninja and Yolandi Visser, both members of Die Antwoord, will play the devious gangsters. Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel is also in talks to star in an unspecified role.
Chappie is based off of a short that Blomkamp co-wrote and directed with Terri Tatchell back in 2004 called Tetra Vaal. It is expected to begin production later this fall.
