At this year’s Bonnaroo festival, the annual Superjam featured a stellar lineup of My Morning Jacket’s Jim James strumming alongside R. Kelly, John Oates, Billy Idol, Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard and others, tackling a heap of covers from the Rolling Stones to Sam Cooke to Prince to Sly & the Family Stone.

To celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime concert experience, the show’s organizers have created an eight-part documentary that gives an in-depth look at the star-studded Rock & Soul Superjam. In this first episode, titled “What Is Superjam?,” “artists and producers look back to the formative days of the now legendary Superjam, and tell the story of how the musicians and songs were selected.” Viewers will also be treated to interviews with James and a peek at some behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage during the band’s early stages.

Of course, this is all before the collective hits the stage with an awesomely epic rendition of John Lennon’s “Instant Karma,” ending episode one on a definite high note. Relive the performance in the video below.
