“I’m gonna roll to the club, I’m gonna holla at the honeyzzz.”
So the single line cryptically posted by Phoenix to their Facebook on Monday turned out to be a slug from R.Kelly’s rap verse on “Trying to be Cool.”
The Trapped In The Closet: Chapters 1-33 songsmith laid the verse in his signature smooth croon over the original track by Phoenix, creating a silky-smooth-and-weird effect, similar to the “Remix to Ignition/1901” mashup from earlier this year. The rest of the rap didn’t differ greatly from that sentiment (other lines included “Going hard tonight, not going home tonight,”) and was positioned neatly between the first and second choruses.
The remix, which was released this afternoon on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 on the BBC, was officially hinted at by the band this morning in a short clip uploaded to its Facebook page.
Frontman Thomas Mars was interviewed by BBC host Huw Stephens following the song’s premiere. When asked about the band and R.Kelly’s divisive Coachella collaboration, which irked half of the festival-goers and drove the other half crazy with excitement, Mars said “What I like about it is a lot of people asked us why…why this happened. That’s the thing I enjoy the most—the ‘why’ in the music world.”
