Watch Adam Scott, Seth Rogen's Audition Tapes for The Office
When The Office neared the end of its run nearly six months ago, audiences had been given almost nine seasons of one-of-a-kind-characters played by relative unknowns who blew up to be some of our favorite sitcom faces. But just as we were all preparing to say our goodbyes to the Dunder-Mifflin crew, Rainn Wilson posted a photo of the first round of casting for the program—which netted actors like Adam Scott and Hamish Linklater—opening up ideas of an alternate Office universe in which there is no Wilson, Steve Carell or John Krasinski. It’s hard to imagine, right?
Well, when season nine of The Office arrives on DVD this fall, it won’t just be up to your imagination—you’ll be able to see the audition tapes of Scott and others as they vied for a spot on the half-hour comedy. The video shows the likes of Adam Scott and John Cho (trying out for Jim Halpert); Seth Rogen (reading for Dwight); Kathryn Hahn (auditioning for Pam Beesly); and Bob Odenkirk (giving his take on Michael Scott).
Adam Scott would have worked as Jim Halpert—though perhaps with a bit more snark and mischievousness than John Krasinski’s version of the lovable floppy-haired salesman—while Rogen is just too likable to be Dwight. Odenkirk also gave a good performance, but it’s hard to envision anyone other than Carell delivering his famous “That’s what she said” one-liner. Plus, what would have happened to other shows like Parks and Recreation and Breaking Bad, not to mention all of those Apatow-Rogen collaborations?
It’s fun to picture these what-ifs, but I think we’re all pretty satisfied with how our Scranton crew turned out. Revisit the cast in their final reason when the DVD comes out Sept. 3.
