After taking on the political thriller The Ides of March, writer/director/producer George Clooney and partner Grant Heslov were looking for a completely different kind of story.
Clooney told USA Today that “Grant and I were looking to do a film that was less cynical than a lot of the films we do.” The result was Monuments Men, a WWII story about a platoon who took it upon themselves to save artistic masterpieces from the Nazi regime. It’s a true story of the eight men assigned to go behind enemy lines to avoid the destruction of 1,000 years of culture.
A story like this begs for a great cast, and it gets that and more. Joining Clooney is pal Matt Damon, funnymen John Goodman and Bill Murray, and Cate Blanchett doing a dead-on German accent. The trailer makes it out to be Ocean’s Eleven colliding with Saving Private Ryan.
“George really just put this whole group together,” Damon told David Letterman. “George really was one of the best directors I’ve ever worked with, and I’ve worked with a lot of directors.”
Monuments Men comes out Dec. 18. Watch the trailer below.
