Watch Guillermo del Toro Geek Out Over Life-Sized Gundam
Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro is a lover of all things sci-fi and fantasy, penning elaborate, visionary stories that begin in a notebook and breathe life on the big screen. But obviously, del Toro’s creatures are pure fiction.
We’re pretty sure most of us didn’t expect Gundam-type creations to crop up in everyday life and neither did del Toro. But on a Japanese TV report promoting the release of Pacific Rim in that country, del Toro traipsed through DiverCity Tokyo Plaza—with two of the film’s stars, Rinko Kikuchi and Mana Ashida—which is home to about 1,000 Gundam models. It’s the “giant” statue in-particular that astounds del Toro.
The filmmaker’s reaction to the statue is priceless (you can skip to the 3:08 mark to see it). Seriously, del Toro is adorably floored by the life-sized model, gazing at it in wonder. We’ve all been there. Del Toro’s passion is pretty magical and proves that you’re never too old to just nerd out.
