The weekend of Lollapalooza was filled with plenty of surprise treats, some more welcomed than others. While Death Grips stole headlines by no-showing the festival, other acts used their time in the spotlight for more favorable recognition.
The Killers headlined Friday night of Lollapalooza and paid tribute to those who shaped them, bringing out New Order guitarist Bernard Sumner for their rendition of Joy Division’s “Shadowplay.”
Sumner played with New Order hours before The Killers took the stage, despite suffering an injury earlier in the week that many feared would put the band on the sidelines for their U.S. tour. Brandon Flowers announced to the crowd that The Killers all grew up as “huge fans” of New Order, even drawing their namesake from the video for “Crystal.” Shortly thereafter Flowers brought Sumner on-stage to perform “Shadowplay.”
The Killers have been covering “Shadowplay” for quite some time, but the track became a live staple around the release of Sam’s Town. The song was also featured on their 2007 compilation of b-sides and rarities titled Sawdust and was showcased in Control, the biopic on Ian Curtis that was released the same year.
